AI changed the algebra
AI made it nearly free to file an issue.
It's still enormously expensive for a maintainer to read one.
- A good bug report used to take real work: explaining the problem clearly, building a minimal reproduction, writing it up
- Now an agent can produce all of that in seconds, real bug or not
Issue volume used to scale with our user base. Not anymore. One person, or one agent, can generate an unlimited stream of reports for almost no effort, so volume can spike with no relation to how many people actually use the project.
